What Is a Network Security Engineer?

A Network Security Engineer designs, implements, and maintains the security controls that protect an organisation's network infrastructure. Where a Network Administrator manages network operations, a Network Security Engineer focuses specifically on the security layer — firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems, network segmentation, and traffic inspection — ensuring that the network is defended against both external attacks and internal threats.

The role sits within security teams and requires a strong foundation in both networking and cybersecurity. Network Security Engineers work on projects including firewall policy management, zero trust network access (ZTNA) implementations, and secure remote access solutions. They also respond to network-based security incidents and work closely with SOC teams to investigate anomalous traffic patterns. As networks extend into cloud environments, familiarity with cloud networking security is increasingly expected.

What Does a Network Security Engineer Do?

  • Design and implement network security architectures including firewalls, IDS/IPS, and segmentation to reduce attack surface
  • Manage and optimise firewall rule sets across enterprise and cloud network boundaries to enforce least-privilege traffic flow
  • Monitor network traffic for anomalies and investigate potential intrusion attempts using SIEM and packet analysis tools
  • Configure and maintain secure remote access solutions including VPN and ZTNA for distributed workforce connectivity
  • Respond to network-based security incidents, containing threats and supporting forensic investigation of affected infrastructure
  • Ensure network security configurations meet compliance requirements across PCI DSS, ISO 27001, and NIST frameworks

How to Become a Network Security Engineer

Typical Route

Most Network Security Engineers hold a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Network Engineering, or Cybersecurity. ABET-accredited programs at four-year universities provide the strongest grounding in networking fundamentals and security principles. Community colleges offer two-year associate degrees in network administration or cybersecurity that serve as a practical entry point, with many graduates moving into network operations before specialising in security. A master's degree in Cybersecurity or Network Engineering supports progression into senior engineering and architecture roles.

Alternative Route

Cisco CCNP Security is the most widely recognised professional credential for this role. Palo Alto PCNSE and PCNSA are valued where Palo Alto infrastructure is deployed; Fortinet NSE 4–7 certifications are sought by employers running Fortinet environments. CompTIA Security+ and Network+ provide a combined foundation for those entering from networking. AWS and Microsoft Azure network security certifications are increasingly expected as network perimeters extend into cloud environments. CBT Nuggets and Infosec Institute deliver structured Cisco and CompTIA preparation programs.

A Day in the Life of a Network Security Engineer

Morning

Review overnight IDS alerts and investigate a pattern of port scanning activity originating from an internal server in the development VLAN that should have no outbound scanning capability
Audit the perimeter firewall rule set and identify 23 rules that have not been used in over 12 months, flagging them for removal in next week's change window
Design the network segmentation architecture for the new retail payment processing environment, ensuring card data flows are isolated and compliant with PCI DSS network separation requirements

Afternoon

Configure a new ZTNA policy restricting third-party vendor remote access to specific management hosts only, replacing a broad VPN access group that granted wider network reach than required
Respond to a SOC escalation about anomalous outbound HTTPS traffic from a finance server, pulling firewall logs to determine whether the destination matches known threat actor infrastructure
Document the firewall rule cleanup recommendations from this morning's audit in a change request, including business justification for each removal and the rollback procedure if needed

Network Security Engineer Job Outlook

Growing

Network security remains a core discipline as organisations defend increasingly complex hybrid environments across financial services, critical infrastructure, and the public sector. Zero trust adoption and the expansion of cloud networking are reshaping the role — engineers who combine traditional firewall and intrusion detection expertise with cloud network security skills are in the strongest market position. Demand is growing steadily rather than surging, anchored by the volume of hybrid infrastructure still in operation and broadening regulatory requirements around network segmentation and access controls.
