What Is a Platform Engineer?
A Platform Engineer builds and maintains the internal developer platforms (IDPs) that software engineering teams use to deploy, run, and monitor their applications. The role sits at the intersection of infrastructure, DevOps, and software engineering — with the primary customer being other developers rather than end users. Platform Engineering is most established in technology companies and large digital organisations, but is growing in financial services and retail as engineering teams scale and infrastructure complexity increases.
Where a DevOps Engineer focuses on the delivery pipeline for a specific product, a Platform Engineer builds the shared tooling and infrastructure that many teams rely on. This includes self-service deployment platforms, CI/CD frameworks, Kubernetes-based runtime environments, developer portals, and observability stacks built on tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, and OpenTelemetry. The goal is to reduce friction for engineering teams — making it faster and safer to ship software without each team managing their own infrastructure. The role is increasingly associated with the Internal Developer Platform movement and tools such as Backstage.
What Does a Platform Engineer Do?
- Design and build internal developer platforms using tools like Backstage or Port to reduce engineering friction
- Manage shared Kubernetes clusters and define deployment standards that engineering teams adopt across services
- Build and maintain CI/CD frameworks and golden path templates that accelerate consistent, repeatable software delivery
- Implement and maintain observability tooling covering logging, metrics, and tracing across the platform estate
- Define and enforce infrastructure standards, security policies, and deployment guardrails to reduce operational risk
- Automate infrastructure provisioning using Terraform or Pulumi to eliminate manual configuration and drift

How to Become a Platform Engineer
Typical Route
Most entrants hold a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering. Platform Engineering is not an entry-level role — most practitioners transition from DevOps, cloud engineering, or backend development after building production infrastructure experience. Research-intensive programs at Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Washington, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign cover the distributed systems foundations the role requires. An MS in Computer Science, Cloud Computing, or Software Engineering supports progression into senior and staff engineer tracks.
Alternative Route
Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), AWS Solutions Architect Associate, and HashiCorp Terraform Associate are the most relevant entry credentials; Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert supports Azure-focused roles. A Cloud Guru and Linux Foundation offer structured Kubernetes and cloud architecture preparation. Practical experience building CI/CD pipelines and internal developer platforms carries more weight than formal credentials at this level, and a GitHub portfolio demonstrating infrastructure-as-code work is a strong signal for US employers.

Platform Engineer Job Outlook
Platform Engineering is one of the fastest-growing disciplines in infrastructure, driven by the scaling needs of engineering organisations across financial services, technology, and e-commerce. As development teams grow, demand for shared internal developer platforms — standardising tooling, deployment pipelines, and environment management — grows with them. The role commands salaries above Cloud and DevOps Engineering at equivalent experience levels, reflecting the seniority and breadth required. Practitioners with Kubernetes, Terraform, and developer experience expertise are consistently the most competitive.
