SQL Server

Managing relational databases for enterprise applications on Microsoft infrastructure

Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database management system designed for enterprise use, offering transactional data storage, business intelligence features, and integration with the broader Microsoft data ecosystem. Database administrators and developers use it to design schemas, write T-SQL queries and stored procedures, manage user permissions, implement replication and high-availability configurations, and optimise query performance. SQL Server Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services extend the core database engine with OLAP cubes, ETL pipelines, and paginated reports respectively. SQL Server is deployed on-premises in enterprise environments running Windows infrastructure and is also available as Azure SQL Database in cloud form. It is the most common enterprise relational database in organisations running Microsoft stacks across UK and US markets.

SQL Server Use Cases

  • Designing and administering relational database schemas with tables, indexes, constraints, and stored procedures for enterprise applications
  • Writing T-SQL queries including complex joins, window functions, and CTEs to support application logic and reporting requirements
  • Configuring high-availability solutions using Always On Availability Groups or failover clustering to meet enterprise uptime requirements
  • Optimising slow query performance using execution plans, index analysis, and statistics updates to reduce application response times
  • Managing database security through login and user configurations, role assignments, row-level security, and transparent data encryption
