What Is a Data Engineer?
A Data Engineer builds and maintains the infrastructure and pipelines that move data from source systems into the platforms where it can be stored, transformed, and analysed. While a Data Analyst works with data to answer questions and a Data Scientist builds models, a Data Engineer makes sure the data is available, reliable, and in the right shape for both. It is one of the fastest-growing roles in the data space, with strong demand across financial services, retail, healthcare, media, and any organisation that has moved seriously into cloud data infrastructure.
Data Engineers work across ingestion, storage, transformation, and orchestration — connecting databases, APIs, and event streams to data warehouses and lakes, and building the pipelines that keep everything flowing. In practice this means working with tools such as Apache Spark, Airflow, or Kafka for orchestration, and warehouse platforms such as Snowflake, BigQuery, or Databricks for storage and transformation. The role requires strong programming skills (Python is the most common language), a solid understanding of distributed systems, and the ability to design data infrastructure that scales as data volumes grow.
What Does a Data Engineer Do?
- Build and maintain data ingestion pipelines from relational databases, REST APIs, and event streams into centralised storage
- Design and implement data storage solutions using cloud data warehouses and data lakes to meet analytical and operational needs
- Develop ELT and ETL processes to transform raw source data into structured, analytics-ready formats for downstream consumers
- Orchestrate and monitor pipeline workflows using Airflow or Prefect, managing scheduling, dependencies, and failure handling
- Implement data quality monitoring and alerting across the data platform to detect and surface issues before they reach consumers
- Collaborate with analytics engineers and data scientists on data availability, structure, and pipeline requirements for active projects

How to Become a Data Engineer
Typical Route
Most Data Engineers hold a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related quantitative field. ABET-accredited programs provide a recognised standard for software and systems foundations; the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Georgia Tech, and the University of Texas at Austin are well represented. A two-year associate degree from a community college is a genuine entry point for candidates who transfer skills from software or analyst roles. A master's degree in Data Science or Computer Science supports progression into senior positions.
Alternative Route
Google Professional Data Engineer and AWS Data Analytics Specialty are the most widely recognised cloud-specific credentials. Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate provides a strong platform-specific foundation; the dbt Certified Developer credential is increasingly valued as dbt becomes standard in US data engineering workflows. Coursera and DataCamp deliver structured pipeline and cloud data courses. A GitHub portfolio demonstrating working pipeline code, data models, and orchestration experience is consistently cited by US employers as the strongest practical evidence of readiness.

Data Engineer Job Outlook
Data Engineering is consistently ranked among the fastest-growing and highest-compensated roles in the data space. Demand is accelerating across financial services, retail, healthcare, and technology as organisations invest in centralised cloud data platforms, real-time analytics, and AI-ready infrastructure. The talent shortage is acute — hiring volume is outpacing supply across experience levels. Engineers with expertise in modern stack tools such as dbt, Snowflake, and Apache Spark, combined with strong pipeline and orchestration skills, are particularly sought after.
