What Is a Machine Learning Engineer?

A Machine Learning Engineer builds the systems and infrastructure that take machine learning models from experimentation into reliable, scalable production. Where a Data Scientist focuses on developing and evaluating models, an ML Engineer focuses on making those models work in the real world — at speed, at scale, and with the reliability that production systems demand. The role is most active in technology companies, financial services, healthcare, and any organisation where predictive or generative models are embedded directly into products or operational processes.

The role requires a combination of software engineering depth and machine learning knowledge that is genuinely rare. ML Engineers design and build model training pipelines, serving infrastructure, feature stores, and monitoring systems — working with tools such as MLflow or Kubeflow for pipeline management, and deploying models via REST APIs or streaming infrastructure. They work closely with Data Scientists to understand model requirements and with platform and data engineering teams to ensure the underlying infrastructure supports production ML workloads. It is one of the most technically demanding and highest-compensated roles in the data space.

What Does a Machine Learning Engineer Do?

  • Build and maintain ML training pipelines and model serving infrastructure to support reliable, repeatable model development and deployment
  • Design and implement feature stores to ensure consistent feature engineering logic is shared across training and serving environments
  • Package, containerise, and deploy models to production using Docker and orchestration platforms with reproducible deployment pipelines
  • Monitor model performance in production and implement automated retraining triggers based on data drift and performance degradation signals
  • Implement ML observability including data drift detection, prediction monitoring, and alerting to maintain model reliability post-deployment
  • Build and maintain MLOps tooling covering experiment tracking, model registry, and CI/CD pipelines for the machine learning lifecycle

How to Become a Machine Learning Engineer

Typical Route

Most Machine Learning Engineers hold a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Mathematics. Many transition from software engineering, developing ML skills, or from data science, building production engineering capability. Universities including MIT, Stanford University, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Washington offer programs with strong machine learning and software systems foundations. An MSc in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or Computer Science is increasingly expected in research-heavy and product ML environments.

Alternative Route

AWS Machine Learning Specialty and Google Professional Machine Learning Engineer are the most widely recognised credentials. Databricks Certified Machine Learning Professional is valued where the Lakehouse stack is in use. Coursera and DeepLearning.AI deliver structured ML engineering pathways accessible to US practitioners. Practical experience building and deploying production ML systems carries more weight than certifications — a GitHub portfolio demonstrating end-to-end ML system design, from training pipeline through to monitored production serving, is the strongest signal of readiness.

A Day in the Life of a Machine Learning Engineer

Morning

Investigate why the recommendation model's prediction latency spiked to 340ms overnight and trace the bottleneck to a feature retrieval call hitting the online feature store cold
Review a Data Scientist's newly trained churn model and assess whether its input feature schema is compatible with the existing serving infrastructure before committing to deployment
Design the retraining trigger logic for the fraud detection model, defining the data drift thresholds that will automatically initiate a new training run in the pipeline

Afternoon

Containerise the updated propensity model using Docker and push it through the CI/CD pipeline to the staging serving environment for load testing
Implement a prediction monitoring job in the MLOps platform that alerts on-call when the fraud model's positive prediction rate drops below the baseline established at launch
Pair with a Data Scientist to diagnose why the experiment tracking run for yesterday's A/B test logged inconsistent feature values between training and the online serving path

Machine Learning Engineer Job Outlook

Booming

Machine Learning Engineering is one of the highest-demand and highest-compensated roles in technology. The combination of software engineering and ML expertise is rare — and as organisations move from ML experimentation to production AI systems at scale, the gap between available talent and open positions continues to widen. Engineers with MLOps depth and large-scale model serving experience command a significant market premium.
