What Is a Solution Architect?

A Solution Architect designs the technical architecture for specific systems, applications, or programmes — translating business requirements into a coherent, implementable technical design. Where an Enterprise Architect sets the strategic technology direction for an entire organisation, a Solution Architect works at the programme or project level, designing how individual solutions should be built, integrated, and deployed within that broader context.

The role sits between senior engineering and technology leadership. Solution Architects work closely with business stakeholders to understand requirements, with development and infrastructure teams to ensure designs are buildable, and with enterprise architects to ensure alignment with organisational standards. The work requires both deep technical knowledge across multiple domains — application, integration, data, and infrastructure — and the communication skills to present and defend design decisions to technical and non-technical audiences alike.

What Does a Solution Architect Do?

  • Design end-to-end technical architectures for programmes, systems, and integrations across cloud and on-premise environments
  • Translate business and functional requirements into technical specifications, design documents, and architecture diagrams
  • Evaluate technology options and make recommendations on build vs buy, platform selection, and tooling choices
  • Produce high-level and low-level design documents, architecture diagrams, and decision records for delivery teams
  • Support delivery teams throughout implementation to resolve design questions and unblock technical issues
  • Conduct architecture reviews and provide formal technical sign-off on major design decisions before build

How to Become a Solution Architect

Typical Route

Solution Architecture is a progression role — most practitioners arrive from senior software engineering, cloud engineering, or technical lead backgrounds rather than entering directly from education. Where a degree is held, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Information Systems are the most common subjects. ABET-accredited programs at universities including the University of Washington, Georgia Tech, and Purdue provide strong technical foundations. An MS in Computer Science is common among practitioners targeting enterprise, financial services, or federal architecture positions.

Alternative Route

AWS Solutions Architect Professional, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, and Google Professional Cloud Architect are the most directly relevant certifications and appear widely in US job descriptions. TOGAF provides enterprise architecture governance context for architects operating within larger organizational frameworks. A Cloud Guru and Linux Foundation offer cloud architect preparation courses used by US practitioners. A portfolio of architecture documents — high-level designs, architecture decision records, integration diagrams from real programs — is the primary evidence US employers use.

A Day in the Life of a Solution Architect

Morning

Review the integration requirements document from the business analyst team and identify three gaps where the proposed API design won't support the stated data volumes
Produce a high-level architecture diagram for the new customer portal, mapping the authentication, data, and third-party integration layers for the delivery team
Present two competing database architecture options to the engineering lead and product owner, with a recommendation based on query patterns and long-term scale

Afternoon

Write an architecture decision record documenting the rationale for choosing an event-driven integration pattern over direct API calls for the payments module
Attend a design review with the enterprise architect to confirm the proposed solution aligns with the organisation's cloud platform and security standards
Support a senior developer who has hit a design question about how to handle session state across the distributed microservices the team is building this sprint

Solution Architect Job Outlook

Growing

Solution Architects are in consistent and growing demand across technology companies, consultancies, and large enterprise IT functions. Organisations running complex technology programmes always need architects who can translate business requirements into sound technical designs. Cloud-experienced architects with integration and security depth are particularly sought after across financial services, healthcare, and the public sector.
