What Is an Enterprise Architect?

An Enterprise Architect defines the overall structure of an organisation's technology environment — how systems, applications, data, and infrastructure fit together and how they align with business strategy. Where a Solution Architect designs how specific systems are built, and a Cloud Architect designs cloud infrastructure, an Enterprise Architect operates at the highest level — setting the principles, standards, and roadmaps that govern technology decisions across the entire organisation.

The role requires deep technical breadth combined with strong business acumen and senior stakeholder management skills. Enterprise Architects work with C-suite executives and business leaders to translate strategic goals into technology direction, assess the implications of major technology investments, and ensure that individual project decisions remain coherent within the wider enterprise context. It is a senior, high-influence role that exists primarily in large enterprises, government organisations, and major consulting firms.

What Does a Enterprise Architect Do?

  • Define and maintain the enterprise architecture framework covering business, data, application, and technology layers
  • Develop and communicate the technology roadmap, aligning planned investments and platform changes to business strategy
  • Govern architecture decisions across programmes and projects to ensure alignment with enterprise standards and strategic direction
  • Assess major technology investments, vendor selections, and build vs buy decisions against architecture principles
  • Establish architecture standards, patterns, and reusable design principles for adoption across engineering and delivery teams
  • Advise C-suite and senior business leaders on technology strategy, platform direction, and digital transformation priorities

How to Become a Enterprise Architect

Typical Route

Enterprise Architecture is a senior progression role reached through years of wide-domain experience — typically from solution architecture, senior engineering, or IT management. Where a formal degree is held, Computer Science, Information Systems, or Software Engineering are the most common backgrounds. Programs at universities including Carnegie Mellon, the University of Michigan, and MIT provide strong technical foundations. An MS in Information Systems or an MBA with a technology strategy concentration supports senior progression in large US enterprises.

Alternative Route

TOGAF 9 certification is the most widely recognised enterprise architecture credential and is required by most US employers; preparation is available through Udemy and The Open Group's official learning platform. The Open Group's ArchiMate certification supports the modelling component of the role. AWS Solutions Architect Professional, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, and Google Professional Cloud Architect demonstrate cloud platform depth. Most US Enterprise Architects reach the role through internal promotion from solution architecture or senior technical lead positions.

A Day in the Life of an Enterprise Architect

Morning

Review three architecture decision records submitted by delivery teams last week and flag two that conflict with the organisation's API governance standard
Present the revised five-year technology roadmap to the CTO and two divisional heads, covering the planned migration away from the legacy CRM platform
Assess a vendor proposal for a new data integration platform against the enterprise architecture framework before the procurement decision is finalised next week

Afternoon

Work with the data architecture lead to map the current application landscape and identify systems generating duplicate master data across divisions
Facilitate a governance session with four programme architects to align their individual solution designs under the organisation's integration standards
Draft updated architecture principles for cloud platform selection following the board's decision to standardise on a single hyperscaler across all new programmes

Enterprise Architect Job Outlook

Growing

Demand for Enterprise Architects is growing as large organisations navigate digital transformation, cloud migration, and increasing technology complexity. The role is senior and the talent pool is relatively small — experienced practitioners with TOGAF credentials and a track record of delivering technology strategy at enterprise scale are consistently in demand across financial services, government, and large enterprise.
